Tochigi, Japan – Toru Taniguchi went above par for the second consecutive round, but his one-over 73 was enough for him to hold on for a victory at the PGA Championship Nissin Cupnoodles Cup.
Taniguchi finished at four-under par 284 to earn his 18th career Japan Tour title. He was one stroke ahead of Keiichiro Fukabori, who shot a one-under 71 at Karasuyamajo Country Club to take second at three-under 285.
Taniguchi and Fukabori had carded four-over 76s during round three, but were the only players to finish the tournament below par.
They were sitting at minus-nine and minus-six, respectively, heading into the weekend. So when the field experienced widespread struggles during the final two rounds, they were still in good position.
Shunsuke Sonoda (73) ended at even-par 288 to finish alone in third. The rest of the field finished above par.
