Bogota, Colombia (SportsNetwork.com) - Top seed Elina Svitolina was an easy opening-round winner, while sixth-seeded American Shelby Rogers exited the draw Monday at the women's Claro Open Colsanitas tennis event.
The Ukrainian Svitolina drilled American Louisa Chirico 6-2, 6-1, while Rogers succumbed to Spanish clay-court specialist and two-time Bogota champion Lourdes Dominguez Lino 6-3, 6-2 on the red clay at Club Campestre El Rancho. The 34-year-old Dominguez Lino is a three-time Claro Open finalist, including titles in 2006 and 2011.
Also on Day 1, German Tatjana Maria handled Colombian wild card Yuliana Lizarazo 6-3, 6-2; German Dinah Pfizenmaier doused 44-year-old Japanese Kimiko Date-Krumm 6-2, 7-5; Israeli Julia Glushko pasted Slovenian qualifier Nastja Kolar 6-3, 6-1; and Brazilian qualifier Beatriz Haddad Maia outlasted Colombian wild card Maria Herazo Gonzalez 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (7-2).
Caroline Garcia, who is not defending her title this week, upset then-reigning champion Jelena Jankovic in last year's Bogota finale.
