Stony Brook holds off Maine, 83-79; prepares for Vermont showdown Thursday

Carson Puriefoy scored 24 points as Stony Brook held off a late rally to beat Maine, 83-79 Sunday.

Stony Brook maintained its place one game behind Vermont atop the America East Conference standings, with a game at Burlington Thursday for a first-place showdown.

Eric McAlister and Jameel Warney each pumped in 15 points for Stony Brook, with Anthony Jackson adding another 14. The Seawolves were 30 of 66 from the field and were 19 of 23 from the free throw line.

Xavier Pollard and Till Gloger each scored 21 points for Maine, with Shaun Lawton adding 10 points. Pollard pulled down 11 rebounds to lead the Black Bears.

Maine shot 52.8 percent from the field (28 of 53) but was outrebounded by the Seawolves 37-30 and managed just five offensive boards while committing 15 turnovers.
