'Sizable' Ransom Demand Made for Mikel's Dad

A management firm representing Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel says kidnappers have been in touch with his family over the abduction of his father and have made a "sizable" ransom demand.

London-based Sport Entertainment & Media Group issued a statement Thursday morning saying negotiations have begun for the release of Michael Obi. The group says it will not discuss details of the ransom requested.

The group says Mikel plans to play for Chelsea on Saturday against West Bromwich Albion.
Michael Obi was kidnapped on Aug. 12 while on his way home from work in the central Nigerian city of Jos.

Kidnappings for ransom regularly occur in Nigeria, though typically in its east and oil-rich southern delta.
