Rockies place Helton on DL

The Colorado Rockies placed first baseman Todd Helton on the 15-day disabled list Friday due to right hip inflammation.

The move is retroactive to July 9.

In 63 games thus far in 2012, Helton, 38, is hitting .235 with seven home runs and 34 runs batted in.

The veteran first baseman of 15-plus major league seasons -- all with the Rockies -- is a career .320 hitter with 354 home runs and 1,342 RBI.

Colorado also placed catcher Wil Nieves on the 15-day DL, retroactive to July 9, with turf toe in his right foot and activated catcher Ramon Hernandez from the 15-day DL.
