Ashburn, VA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Washington Redskins named Bruce Allen as team president on Monday.

Allen will continue to be general manager of the Redskins and serve in both capacities.

"I think the world of Bruce Allen and giving him both titles is appropriate," said owner Dan Snyder.

Allen was hired as executive vice president and general manager of the Redskins on Dec. 17, 2009. He was also general manager of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2004-08.

He also as a senior executive under Al Davis with the Oakland Raiders from 1996-2003.

Allen issued a response last week to defend the Redskins name in a letter to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid after 50 U.S. senators demanded that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell change the team name, calling it racist.
