Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg each had a goal and an assist as the Detroit Red Wings took a 3-2 win over the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday.
Gustav Nyquist had the other goal while Jimmy Howard posted 30 saves for the Red Wings, who had lost four of five coming into the game.
Detroit moved to 97 points on the season and sits in third place in the Atlantic Division, two ahead of Boston.
"The bottom line for us is that we're in control of our situation," said Detroit head coach Mike Babcock. "I think it's important when teams have to fight through adversity to get where they want to go."
Chris Terry had a goal and an assist and Nathan Gerbe also scored for the Hurricanes, who have dropped five of six. Anton Khudobin allowed all three goals on 25 shots in the loss.
"We had the lead going into the third and wanted to close it out," said Carolina center Eric Staal. "But they were desperate and they made some plays in the third and capitalized."
Trailing by a goal, the Red Wings tied the game at 1:56 of the third as Datsyuk sent a short pass from the right boards to the circle where Nyquist's shot went between the pads of Khudobin.
Detroit then took a 3-2 lead at 11:25 of the third thanks to Zetterberg's hard work, as he skated down the left wing and forced his way through a check. Skating out to the right side of the net, he centered the puck where Datsyuk kicked it to his stick and shot it in.
The Hurricanes pulled Khudobin from the net with just under two minutes to play for an extra attacker, but were unable to knot things up before the buzzer.
After a scoreless first period, the Red Wings went on top 1:29 into the second on the power play as Stephen Weiss sent a pass from the left boards to the slot where Zetterberg switched to the backhand and lifted it in.
Carolina, though, tied the game at 14:08 of the second when Gerbe snapped in a rebound chance, and it was Terry giving the team a 2-1 lead with 2:50 left in the second as he buried a rebound for his 11th of the season.
