Red Wings name Renney associate coach

The Detroit Red Wings bolstered their coaching ranks on Thursday, naming former NHL bench boss Tom Renney as associate coach.

Renney comes to the Motor City after a two-year stint as head coach of the rebuilding Edmonton Oilers, during which he finished 57-85-22 with a pair of last-place finishes in the Northwest Division.

The 57-year-old British Columbia native replaced Jeff Blashill, who was reassigned within the organization as head coach of the Grand Rapids Griffins in the American Hockey League.

Over parts of nine NHL campaigns with the Canucks, Rangers and Oilers, Renney has compiled a 260-255-68 record along with nine ties in the regular season, carrying an 11-13 mark in the postseason.
