St. Petersburg, FL – Tampa Bay Rays outfielder B.J. Upton will begin the season on the disabled list with lower back soreness.
The move, announced Wednesday, is retroactive to March 26. Upton hit .243 with 23 homers and 81 runs batted in over 153 games with Tampa Bay last season.
Joining Upton on the DL were catcher Robinson Chirinos (concussion), also retroactive to March 26, and outfielder Sam Fuld.
Fuld is expected to miss at least four months because of wrist surgery to stabilize a ligament in his right wrist.
