In a series featuring a Devils team that had never appeared in the Stanley Cup Final and a Red Wings team that hadn't won the Cup since 1955, something had to give. But with three straight victories by a combined score of 11-5, the Devils never appeared flustered as they entered Game 4 at the Meadowlands.

The unflappable Devils continued their torrid pace towards Lord Stanley's Cup in Game 4 as Neal Broten opened the scoring just 68 seconds into the game. But Sergei Fedorov replied with the tying marker just 55 seconds later, demonstrating that Detroit was not yet ready to fade into the offseason. But another goal from Broten and two more from Shawn Chambers would lead the Devils to their second straight 5-2 victory and the team's first-ever Stanley Cup. Martin Brodeur would allow just seven goals in the entire series and Claude Lemieux won his first Conn Smythe Trophy to go along with his second Cup victory.
