Raising the Cup Presents: 1997 Stanley Cup Final Game 4

NHL Network is going to raise the Cup all summer long.

Every day at noon, we'll roll out another Cup clincher to stave off your hockey hunger. Watch your heroes of yesterday win it all ... again.

Fans can tune in at 12 p.m. ET every weekday for a different game -- and different champion. A complete program schedule can be found on NHLNetwork.com (U.S.).

The brooms came out at Joe Louis Arena as Red Wings fans eagerly anticipated a Final sweep and the team's first Stanley Cup championship since 1955. The Wings entered Game 4 in complete control of the series, while the Flyers were trying to catch their breath.

Coach Terry Murray had commented after Philly's 6-1 loss in Game 3 that the team was "in a choking situation," which was interpreted as Murray calling out his team for cracking under pressure, though it was likely a reference to Detroit's smothering play.

Things started out a little better in Game 4, as the Flyers pressed the attack throughout the first period. However, Nicklas Lidstrom blasted a well-screened one-timer from the blue line past Ron Hextall in the final minute to give the Wings a 1-0 lead.

The deal-breaker came in the second as Darren McCarty undressed rookie defenseman Janne Niinimaa on a break in front of the crease, cut back to his right and wristed the puck over a sprawled Hextall to make it 2-0.

Flyers captain Eric Lindros, under fire throughout the Final for a perceived lack of leadership after manhandling the Rangers in the Eastern Conference Finals, scored with 15 seconds left for his only goal in the series, but the Wings held on for the 2-1 championship-clinching victory.
