Bogota, Colombia (SportsNetwork.com) - Second-seeded promising Puerto Rican Monica Puig was an easy winner, while former French Open champion Francesca Schiavone was sent packing Tuesday at the women's Claro Open tennis event.
Puig cruised past Dutch qualifier Cindy Burger 6-2, 6-3, while the fourth- seeded Schiavone succumbed to Brazilian Teliana Pereira 6-1, 6-4 on the red clay at Club Campestre El Rancho.
Up next for Puig will be American Nicole Gibbs.
Meanwhile, 2012 Bogota runner-up Alexandra Panova of Russia upended third- seeded Croat Ajla Tomljanovic 6-4, 6-1; fifth-seeded Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan snuck past Ukrainian Maryna Zanevska 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 6-2; 2010 Bogota champion and Bogota native Mariana Duque-Marino dismissed seventh- seeded Hungarian Timea Babos 6-4, 6-7 (10-12), 6-3; and eighth-seeded American Irina Falconi rolled past Romanian Sorana Cirstea 6-4, 6-1.
Also on Day 2, American qualifier Sachia Vickery held off Slovak Kristina Kucova 6-0, 5-7, 6-4; the aforementioned Gibbs doused Aussie qualifier Anastasia Rodionova 6-3, 7-5; Montenegro's Danka Kovinic topped Colombian wild card Maria Paulina Perez Garcia 6-4, 6-1; and qualifier Mandy Minella of Luxembourg overcame Austrian Patricia Mayr-Achleitner 4-6, 7-5, 6-2. Kovinic will face top seed Elina Svitolina of Ukraine in the second round.
American women were a perfect 3-0 on Tuesday.
