PSV, AZ suffer shock defeats

The top of the Eredivisie table 0 defeats to Groningen and Utrecht, respectively.

Groningen edged 10-man PSV at the Euroborg as Suk Hyun-Jun scored in the 29th and 74th minutes while Leandro Bacuna added a goal in the 51st minute. The visitors were reduced to 10 men after Stanislav Manolev picked up a second yellow card in the 56th minute.

The win snaps a three-game losing skid for Groningen as the club moves into a tie with Vitesse for seventh place on 32 points.

Utrecht claimed its victory Sunday in similar fashion, getting a brace at home in a three-goal win over 10-man AZ.

Niklas Moisander was issued a straight red card for AZ in the 15th minute for his denial of goal-scoring opportunity. Alexander Gerndt stepped up to convert the ensuing penalty before doubling the lead six minutes later. Edouard Duplan scored in the 41st minute to put the Cheese Farmers to the sword.

Utrecht is unbeaten in its last three league matches and climbs to 11th place in the Dutch top flight on 25 points.

PSV and AZ emerge from the weekend the same way they entered, tied atop the Eredivisie table on 45 points.

Elsewhere on Sunday, Ajax cruised to a 4-1 victory over NEC at the Amsterdam ArenA behind a first-half brace from Dmitri Bulykin, while Twente claimed a 4-1 win at Vitesse to bounce back from a 3-2 loss to Heracles in its last outing.
