East Carolina coach Ruffin McNeill is taking back control of his health.

The former Pirates' defensive back has lost 90 pounds since having weight-loss surgery in January. Next up is hip replacement surgery later this month, which will allow "Coach Ruff" to walk easier and without pain.

McNeill says he's trying to be the best "husband, father and coach I can be." He also says he doesn't want to ask his players to do something he's not willing to do himself.

McNeill weighed 388 pounds before the first surgery and is already down to 298.

Offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley praises McNeill for having the "humility" to tackle his health concerns despite being a public figure.
