Peterson, Townsel lead Arkansas State to 68-63 overtime victory over Troy in Sun Belt tourney

Brandon Peterson had 18 points and 17 rebounds and Ed Townsel scored 19 points off the bench as Arkansas State held off Troy 68-63 in overtime Saturday in the second round of the Sun Belt Conference tournament.

The second-seeded Red Wolves (19-11) advance to face sixth-seeded Western Kentucky in the semifinals on Sunday.

Hunter Williams led No. 10 seed Troy (12-21) with 15 points and five assists. Antoine Myers added 12 points for the Trojans, who were playing their second straight overtime game after defeating seventh-seeded Florida Atlantic 81-79 in a first-round game Friday.

Arkansas State hit just 4 of 22 3-pointers but compensated by sinking 22 of 30 free throws. Troy, on the other hand, was 9 of 18 beyond the arc but just 8 of 13 at the foul line.

The teams split the regular-season series with each winning on its home court.
