New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick isn't saying whether the team would be interested in released Houston Texans safety Ed Reed.

Belichick has been complimentary of Reed in the past. Quarterback Tom Brady once said the coach wanted to adopt Reed.

Reed is a nine-time Pro Bowl selection with the Baltimore Ravens who was relegated to a backup role after hip surgery in his first season in Houston. The Texans released him Tuesday after he criticized the coaches subbing for Gary Kubiak following his mini-stroke.

Belichick told reporters on a conference call Wednesday that whenever a player is released the team evaluates whether he could help the Patriots. Belichick says New England's safeties have been "pretty solid" this year.
