(SportsNetwork.com) - Odrisamer Despaigne steps in the for the injured Ian Kennedy on Tuesday night when the San Diego Padres resume a three-game series with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Despaigne relieved an injured Kennedy last Thursday versus the San Francisco Giants and retired all 14 batters he faced in a perfect 4 2/3-inning appearance. He also struck out a batter to keep San Diego in a game it lost 1-0 in 12 innings.
With Kennedy on the disabled list because of a strained left hamstring, Despaigne will slide into the rotation. The 28-year-old righty went 4-7 with a 3.36 earned run average in 16 starts last season, going 1-2 with a 2.96 ERA in four games versus Arizona.
Jeremy Hellickson counters for Arizona and takes a second crack at winning his first game with the club.
Hellickson made his Diamondbacks debut last Wednesday versus the Giants. However, he struggled in allowing nine hits and two walks over 4 1/3 innings, getting a loss despite limiting the damage to three runs.
"I don't think any of his location was any good," D-backs manager Chip Hale said of Hellickson's outing. "I think (the staff) is amped up a little bit."
Hellickson, also a 28-year-old right-hander, has faced the Padres only once before and did not get a decision. He allowed six runs and two homers over 6 2/3 innings with eight strikeouts.
The Diamondbacks halted the Padres' three-game winning streak by posting an 8-4 victory last night. Arizona broke the game open with a four-run second inning, with each run unearned due to an error by San Diego's Yangervis Solarte.
Ender Inciarte had three hits -- a pair of doubles and a triple -- and drove in four runs to pace a 12-hit attack. Rubby De La Rosa lasted six innings and limited the Padres to three runs to give the D-backs their third victory in four games.
Andrew Cashner struck out nine over six innings in the loss. He scattered seven hits and a walk while giving up just the four unearned runs.
"Overall his stuff was fine," Padres manager Bud Black said of his starter.
Solarte drove in two runs and Yonder Alonso belted a solo homer in defeat.
The Diamondbacks have won five of their past six versus the Padres and went 12-7 in this matchup last season.
