Nurnburg surprises Bremen at Weserstadion

Nurnburg surprised Werder Bremen at the 0 win over the River Islanders to put a halt to their unbeaten run.

Bremen entered the contest without a loss in its last five Bundesliga matches, but Nurnburg narrowly put a stop to that streak with a one-goal victory.

The lone goal of the match came in the 65th minute as Alexander Esswein notched his fourth goal of the campaign to lift "The Club" to all three points.

Nurnburg entered the match in 13th place, but its second successive win sees the club advance all the way to 10th place. Riding a three-game unbeaten run, Nurnburg improves to 28 points on the year.

Werder Bremen falls to sixth place following Bayer Leverkusen's defeat of Cologne on Saturday. The Green-and-Whites sit one point shy of Leverkusen with 36 points on the year.

Mainz 4, Kaiserslautern 0

Mainz, Germany - Four different scorers helped Mainz cruise to a comfortable 4-0 victory over Kaiserslautern at the Coface Arena on Saturday.

Mainz took a three-goal lead by halftime as Mohamed Zidan, Adam Szalai, and Nicolai Muller all chipped in with a goal apiece, while Eric Maxim Choupo- Moting tacked on a fourth goal in the 74th minute to add insult to injury for Kaiserslautern.

Kaiserslautern has lost four straight to remain tied with Freiburg for last place, while Mainz extended its unbeaten streak to games to climb up to 10th place.

Stuttgart 4, Freiburg 1

Stuttgart, Germany - Martin Harnik bagged a brace to lead Stuttgart to a 4-1 win over Freiburg at the Mercedes-Benz Arena on Saturday.

Harnik opened game with a goal in the 12th minute and closed it out with a goal in the 82nd minute. Sandwiched in between were goals from Shinji Okazaki in the 22nd minute and Khalid Boulahrouz in the 63rd minute, while Freiburg pulled a consolation goal back in the 27th minute through Diagne Fallou.

Freiburg remains tied with Kaiserslautern for last place on 18 points but occupies the bottom position on goal differential. Stuttgart improves to 29 points to move into eighth place.

Bayer Leverkusen 2, Cologne 0

Cologne, Germany - A two-goal performance from Lars Bender helped Bayer Leverkusen take three points from Cologne in a 2-0 win at the RheinEnergieStadion on Saturday.

Bender got Leverkusen off the mark in the 16th minute and secured the win in the second half by completing his brace in the 51st minute.

The win is Bayer Leverkusen's second on the bounce, taking the club ahead of Werder Bremen and into fifth place on 37 points. Cologne, meanwhile, has lost three straight and remains just four points above the relegation zone.

Augsburg 3, Hertha Berlin 0

Augsburg, Germany - Augsburg climbed out of the relegation zone with a resounding 3-0 win over Hertha Berlin at the Impuls Arena on Saturday.

Torsten Oehrl notched two goals in the span of two second-half minutes to guide the home side to all three points. Marcel Ndjeng added a third for Augsburg in stoppage time.

Augsburg moves fourth from bottom, one point clear of the drop zone, at the expense of Hertha Berlin, which sits 16th after losing its sixth straight Bundesliga contest.

Hoffenheim 2, Wolfsburg 1

Wolfsburg, Germany - Hoffenheim handed Wolfsburg its second straight loss in Bundesliga play as the visitors claimed a 2-1 win at the Volkswagen Arena on Saturday.

Roberto Firmino gave Hoffenheim an early lead with a goal in just the second minute. It was canceled out by Wolfsburg's Patrick Helmes in the 69th minute, but Sven Schipplock grabbed the winner six minutes from time, picking the ideal moment to score his first Bundesliga goal of the season.

Wolfsburg stays on 27 points through 23 games, tied with Hamburg and Mainz, while Hoffenheim, unbeaten in its last four games, climbs up to ninth place on 29 points.
