Nogueira's late goal lifts Union over NYC

Chester, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Philadelphia Union finally got into the win column on Saturday as Vincent Nogueira's goal in stoppage time lifted the side to a 2-1 win over New York City FC at PPL Park.

Zach Pfeffer put the Union ahead midway through the first half, but it looked like Philadelphia would be denied again as David Villa equalized in the 55th minute.

But after kicking away points against Sporting Kansas City last weekend, it was the Union that provided the late drama with a goal from Nogueira.

The result ends Philadelphia's five-match losing skid to start the season, while New York has now gone three games without a victory.

Sebastien Le Toux set up the first goal by getting to the end line and pulling the ball back to the front of goal, where Eric Ayuk Mbu got a touch on the ball to knock it off the foot of Pfeffer and over the goal line.

Chances were kept to a minimum for both teams but Villa equalized after a scramble inside the penalty area drew Union goalkeeper John McCarthy off his line, leaving the Spaniard with an empty net.

It looked like the Union would once again come up short in a bid to claim a win, but the hosts made the most of a late chance to snatch the win.

Andrew Wenger's cross from the left wing was snatched by NYC goalkeeper Josh Saunders. However, he collided with the Union's Conor Casey and spilled the ball, allowing Nogueira to hammer home the winner.
