New York's Sam named MLS Player of the Week

Red Bull New York midfielder Lloyd Sam was voted the Major League Soccer Player of the Week on Monday for Week 23 of the 2013 season.

Sam came off the bench in the 60th minute for New York against Sporting Kansas City and provided a goal and an assist to lift his team to a 3-2 win.

With the game tied at 1-1, Sam set up a goal for Fabian Espindola in the 63rd minute, and he found the net himself six minutes later after taking a pass from Jonny Steele and cutting the ball back past a defender before beating Sporting goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen.

Sam is the second New York player to be named Player of the Week this season, joining Tim Cahill in Week 9.

The MLS Player of the Week award is selected each week by the North American Soccer Reporters. The group consists of members of online, print, television, and radio media.
