A controversy is brewing over Mark Sánchez and an online report about an alleged relationship he had with a teenage girl.
The New York Jets starting quarterback reportedly exchanged text messages with the 17-year-old girl, took her to dinner, and then brought her back to his New Jersey home, Deadspin.com reported.
The online website did not identify the girl, except for her initials.
Sánchez, 24, has declined comment through his lawyers.
The two allegedly met at a nightclub on New Year's Eve. Deadspin said the girl bragged about exchanging texts with Sánchez on Facebook, and later took pictures of his room, which the website published.
Sánchez does not appear to be in any legal trouble, as statutory rape laws in New Jersey do not prohibit a relationship between an adult and anyone who is at least 17 years old.
In 2006, Sánchez, while a student at the University of Southern California, was arrested for sexual assault. Los Angeles prosecutors did not press charges, however.
Sánchez is coming off another successful campaign for the New York Jets. He lead the team to its second straight American Football Conference championship game.
