Mariners' Carp named AL Rookie of the Month

Seattle Mariners first baseman Mike Carp was named the American League's top rookie for the month of August.

Carp led all Junior Circuit rookies with 25 RBI during the just-completed month and tied for the lead with eight doubles. He hit for a .313 average with a .545 slugging percentage, six home runs and 15 runs scored in the period.

He also carried a career-high 20-game hitting streak from July 30 through August 21.

Other first-year players receiving votes included Yankees pitcher Ivan Nova, Tampa Bay outfielder Desmond Jennings, Blue Jays third baseman Brett Lawrie and Angels first baseman Mark Trumbo.
