Manchester City have sent David Silva for a scan on his calf to get to the bottom of the muscle spasms he has been experiencing for the past fortnight, Goal has learned.

Silva was initially named in the City starting line-up for Saturday's home game against West Ham but was withdrawn before kick-off, with Jesus Navas replacing him.

City lost the match 2-1, following on from Tuesday's defeat by the same scoreline at home to Juventus in the Champions League, and a prickly Manuel Pellegrini reluctantly confirmed to journalists that the playmaker had a calf problem.

"David has a kick in his calf and he tried in the warm up but he felt his muscle was stiff so he didn't play," he said.

Goal understands the Spain international has been suffering spasms and the club are keen not to take any chances over the fitness of one of their most important players.

The 29-year-old midfielder had been training normally in the build-up to the West Ham game and can walk and kick the ball without problems, but the intermittent complaint affects his ability to get moving from a standing position.

Saturday's game was the second time Silva has missed a match through injury this season, as he also sat out the 1-0 victory at Crystal Palace last weekend as City looked to manage an ankle knock he picked up during the recent international fixtures.
