Lille stays the course with Montpellier defeat

Lille, France (SportsNetwork.com) - Lille maintained its hold on third place in Ligue 1 by getting a 2-0 victory over Montpellier at the Grand Stade Lille Metropole on Sunday.

With first-place PSG and second-place Monaco getting wins on Saturday, Lille was in need of a victory in order to keep pace at the top of the Ligue 1 table.

It managed to do just that by grabbing a goal in both halves of Sunday's affair, extending its unbeaten run in league play to five games.

Marko Basa opened the scoring for Lille in the 18th minute while Nolan Roux made sure of the three points in the 57th minute, lifting the club to 52 points on the season.

Montpellier suffers its first Ligue 1 defeat of the calendar year to stay on 33 points.

Also on Sunday, Jeremie Aliadiere converted a 90th-minute penalty to lift Lorient to a 1-0 victory over St. Etienne while Lyon produced two goals in second-half stoppage time to get a dramatic 2-1 victory over Bordeaux.
