Andrew Landry had to take only one shot Friday morning to set an Oakmont record at the U.S Open.

Landry rolled in a 10-foot birdie putt on the ninth hole to finish his rain-delayed first round at 4-under 66. It gave him a one-shot lead over Lee Westwood among the first half of the field to finish. In 10 majors at Oakmont in stroke play, Landry's score was the lowest for an opening round.

That was due mainly to nearly 3 inches of rain that softened the course and allowed for reasonable scoring.

Westwood completed his round with two birdies in his bid to finally win a major.

Still to be determined was Landry's score would stand up. Jason Day, Dustin Johnson and Phil Mickelson started their first round Friday.
