Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany is likely to miss the next month because of a groin injury.

Kompany sustained the problem in City's 4-0 season-opening win over Newcastle on Monday, and City manager Manuel Pellegrini has said that the Belgium international will be "out for at least one month."

City will visit Cardiff City on Sunday with league matches against Hull City and Stoke City follow.

The Citizens will host rivals Manchester United on Sept. 22, and the club will be hopeful that Kompany could be fit in time for the showdown.

City is already short on options in central defense with Matija Nastasic also missing through injury, which could prompt the club to sign another defender before the close of the summer transfer window on Sept. 2.
