SINGAPORE – Karrie Webb birdied six holes to shoot a 6-under 66 and take a one-stroke lead after the opening round of the HSBC Women's Champions on Thursday.
Sweden's Caroline Hedwall and American Paula Creamer were tied for second place after shooting 5-under 67 at Sentosa Golf Club, a stroke ahead of 2012 tournament champion Angela Stanford and Taiwan's Teresa Lu in fourth.
Webb, who has won seven majors but none since 2006, started the year off strongly by winning her fifth Women's Australian Open title earlier this month.
The veteran Australian had a chance to open up a two-stroke lead with a 15-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole but missed by a few inches.
