Florham Park, NJ – New York Jets tight end Jeff Cumberland has been lost for the season with a torn Achilles tendon.
Cumberland, in his second season out of Illinois, caught just three balls for 38 yards in three games over two years -- including one reception for two yards in a 32-3 win over Jacksonville on September 18.
He suffered the injury during the second quarter of Sunday's 34-24 loss in Oakland.
The 24-year-old underwent an MRI earlier Monday which revealed the tear, according to the New York Daily News.
The Jets also announced that quarterback Mark Sanchez has a small break in his nose, but will not have any impediment due to the injury and will wear a shield along with his facemask.
Sanchez, a third-year pro from Southern California, threw for 369 yards and two touchdowns with one interception on Sunday.
