Jets release Cromartie
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}Florham Park, NJ (SportsNetwork.com) - The New York Jets released cornerback Antonio Cromartie on Sunday.
Cromartie battled a hip injury in 2013, while picking up 38 tackles, three interceptions and a forced fumble. He called it one of the worst seasons of his career.
"Cro is one of the finest athletes I've ever coached," said head coach Rex Ryan. "He was willing to contribute wherever the team needed him to win games, be it defense, special teams or offense. He has a passion and enthusiasm for the game and I wish him and his family the best."
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}The move will save the Jets $9.5 million in salary cap space.
The eight-year veteran spent the past four seasons with the Jets after being traded in 2010 by the San Diego Chargers for a 2011 second-round pick.
The three-time pro bowler tweeted "It's now time for a new chapter in my life and now it's time to let my lord and savior lead my steps every step of the way. I would also like to give a big up to The Jets Fan base. Thank you for all the support thru my 4 yr career with you. Thank you again."
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}The Florida State product, who will turn 30 in April, has 325 tackles and 28 interceptions in 127 games. He was drafted 19th overall in 2006 by the Chargers.
