Islanders sign Montoya to one-year extension
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}The New York Islanders on Tuesday rewarded Al Montoya for his strong play with a one-year contract extension.
Montoya, 26, is 8-4-4 with a 2.35 goals-against average and .923 save percentage in 17 games since coming over from the Phoenix Coyotes on Feb. 9, in exchange for a 2011 sixth-round pick.
He started the season with the Coyotes' American Hockey League affiliate, the San Antonio Rampage, where he went 11-8-0 with a 3.19 GAA and .891 save percentage.
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}Prior to this season, Montoya, the sixth pick of the 2004 Entry Draft, had played in just five NHL games, all with the Coyotes in the 2008-09 season.
