Uniondale, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - As expected, the New York Islanders placed center John Taveras on injured reserve Monday due to a season-ending knee injury he sustained during the Winter Olympics.
The team captain tore the medial collateral ligament and suffered meniscus damage in his left knee while playing for Team Canada in last week's quarterfinal matchup against Latvia in Sochi.
The Islanders have not disclosed whether or not Tavares will require surgery to repair the injury, though they had already ruled him out for the remainder of the season.
