Iowa State hands reins to ex-star Hoiberg

The Mayor is returning to Ames.

Former Iowa State star Fred Hoiberg, nicknamed the Mayor in his college days, has accepted the Cyclones job to replace Greg McDermott.

An official announcement is expected on Wednesday.

Hoiberg, 37, is from Nebraska and played four years in Ames -- three for Johnny Orr and one for Tim Floyd.

He retired from the NBA in 2006 and has been in the front office for the Minnesota Timberwolves -- as the vice president of basketball operations.

Hoiberg has no coaching experience, but one coach who knows him well said he will be a good hire.

"He'll leave no stone unturned," the sources said. "He's very methodical and is a super guy. He's like God at Iowa State."
