Hill, Pollock homer as D-backs edge Padres

Phoenix, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Aaron Hill and A.J. Pollock homered as the Arizona Diamondbacks earned a split of their four-game series against the San Diego Padres with a 2-1 win on Sunday.

Daniel Hudson, making his first start of the season, allowed two hits over his 3 1/3 innings, striking out five. J.C. Ramirez (1-0) got the win after allowing one run on four hits over 2 2/3 frames in relief.

Andrew Cashner (1-6) was given the loss in his seven-inning performance. Cashner allowed both solo homers and struck out six.

"I think we are starting to see a little bit of (Cashner) being (Cashner)," Padres manager Bud Black said.

Jedd Gyorko had San Diego's lone RBI.

Hill homered in the second and Pollock followed that up with one of his own in the third as Arizona was staked to a 2-0 lead.

Wil Myers and Will Venable each walked around a Justin Upton single with one out in the fourth to end Hudson's day. Ramirez came on and worked out of the jam with a strikeout of Gyorko and a groundout of Alexi Amarista.

"He showed a lot of guts and guile," D-backs manager Chip Hale said of Ramirez.

Venable singled with two outs in the sixth, stole second and scored on Gyorko's double to center that cut the deficit to one.

Evan Marshall rolled a double play to end the eighth inning and keep the D- backs on top.

Pollock made a nice running stab for the first out of the ninth, and Addison Reed closed it out with a strikeout of Yangervis Solarte and a groundout of Matt Kemp for his second save.
