Desmond Haymon scored 16 points, including a trio of 3-pointers, to lead Stephen F. Austin to an 84-30 victory over Howard Payne on Friday night in the season opener for both teams.

Haymon was 5 of 8 from the field, including 3 of 3 from 3-point range. Deshaunt Walker had 15 points and was 5 of 9 from 3-point range, as the Lumberjacks made 10 of 24 3-point shots. Taylor Smith added 12 points and Thomas Walkup was 5 of 5 from the field, with 11 points. Ice Asortse had 10 points and Nikola Gajic had four steals.

The Lumberjacks never trailed in the game, leading 36-14 at halftime.

Quelan Lancaster led Howard Payne with 6 points. Christian Davis, Michael Thompson, Travis Taillet, JaKalan Gayden and Ross Whittet each had 4 points.

The game marked the second time in three seasons that the Lumberjacks opened with Howard Payne, a Division III team.
