Gio Gonzalez tossed his first career shutout and the National League East-leading Washington Nationals posted a 10-0 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals in the second installment of a four- game set.
Gonzalez (17-7), making his first appearance against the Cardinals, scattered five hits, walked three and struck out eight on his way to setting a new career high in wins.
"I was just trying to do my best to try to minimize the damage as much as possible, but our defense made some great plays," Gonzalez said. "The offense came alive, 10 runs is a pretty good cushion."

"Definitely a loss you can pin on my shoulders, no doubt," Wainwright admitted. "I was focused, I had a good plan, I just didn't execute."
The Nationals jumped on Wainwright in the first inning as Jayson Werth and Bryce Harper scored on a single by Adam LaRoche.
Washington put up a four-spot in the third, chasing Wainwright from the mound.

Danny Espinosa, Kurt Suzuki and Werth also contributed RBI singles in the frame.
