Grapevine, TX – Third-seeded German Julia Goerges was a round winner Sunday at the inaugural $220,000 Texas Tennis Open, a final tuneup for the U.S. Open.
Goerges battled back to beat Alize Cornet of France 0-6, 6-4, 6-0 at Hilton DFW Lakes Hotel.
In a mild upset, Sorana Cirstea of Romania outlasted seventh-seeded Jarmila Gajdosova of Slovakia 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Irina-Camelia Begu, the No. 8 seed, took down Pauline Parmentier of France 6-1, 6-3.
Gisela Dulko of Argentina, Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia, Italian Alberta Brianti and Johanna Larsson of Sweden also posted first-round victories.
