Bucharest, Romania (SportsNetwork.com) - Guillermo Garcia-Lopez won a pair of tiebreakers to beat Jiri Vesely for the title at the BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy tournament on Sunday.
Garcia Lopez earned a 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (13-11) triumph in the final for his fifth career title and second of the year. He won in Zagreb the week after the Australian Open in February.
Entering this week, however, the fifth-seeded Spaniard had won just two matches in five events since that victory. He improved to 5-3 all-time in finals, including 1-1 in this event.
Garcia-Lopez reached the title match in Bucharest two years ago, falling to Lukas Rosol. He gained a measure of revenge earlier this week, knocking off Rosol in the quarterfinals.
Vesely, in his second final of 2015, regrouped after dropping the first three games of Sunday's match and had a chance to serve for the first set. However, Garcia-Lopez broke serve and saved two set points to force a tiebreaker.
After a trade of breaks in the second set, Vesely again failed to convert a pair of set points in the tiebreaker. Garcia-Lopez finally finished the seventh-seeded Czech on his sixth match point.
Vesely, who was 1-2 in three Challenger Tour meetings with Garcia-Lopez, fell to 1-1 lifetime in finals. He beat Adrian Mannarino to win in Auckland back in January, but had been a first-round loser in seven of his eight events since.
