Shanghai, China (SportsNetwork.com) - Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron won ice dancing gold at the 2015 World Figure Skating Championships on Friday.
Papadakis and Cizeron started the free skate in fourth place after the short dance on Wednesday, but skated flawlessly on Friday to register a top score of 112.34 to finish with a two-day total of 184.28.
The French pair finished 13th at last year's worlds, but gave a glimpse of their talent earlier this year by winning the European championship.
Americans Madison Chock and Evan Bates held the lead after the short dance, but wound up with the silver medal. The duo, who were eighth at last year's Olympics, had the second-best score Friday at 106.87 to finish nearly three points behind at 181.34.
Chock and Bates were attempting to become just the second American ice dancers to win gold at the world championships after Meryl Davis and Charlie White, who took the title in 2011 and 2013.
Canadians Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje picked up the bronze medal with a two-day score of 179.42. The couple earned a silver medal at last year's worlds after a seventh-place finish at the Sochi Games.
Italy's Anna Cappellini and Luca Lanotte finished just off the podium in fourth after winning last year's world title.
