Fox: Orton to start Broncos' season opener
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}Denver Broncos head coach John Fox ended any speculation during practice on Monday by naming Kyle Orton the team's starting quarterback for the regular season opener against the rival Oakland Raiders.
"We're going to name Kyle the starter against the Raiders," said Fox, who did not confirm whether Brady Quinn or Tim Tebow will serve as the primary backup.
Quinn was the second string signal caller in Saturday's preseason game against the Bills and finished with 130 yards, one touchdown and one interception on 10-of-16 passing. Tebow, meanwhile, attempted just two passes, completing one for 10 yards.
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}Orton has served as Denver's starting quarterback the last two years and has compiled at least 3,650 yards and 20 touchdowns each season.
Denver's selection of Tebow in the first round of the 2010 draft appeared to mark the end of Orton's days atop the depth chart. Tebow started three games last year and totaled seven touchdowns in those contests.
But the former Heisman Trophy winner from Florida has not progressed enough under Fox, causing Orton to remain Denver's No. 1 QB for the September 12th opener.
