Former NASCAR Driver Mayfield Arrested for Meth Possession
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}Former NASCAR driver Jeremy Mayfield was arrested in North Carolina for possession of methamphetamine as police hauled from his home 40 guns and nearly $100,000 worth of suspected stolen goods.
According to WBTV, the 42-year-old Mayfield was taken into custody Tuesday night when police arrived to serve a search warrant at his home in Catawba, about 40 miles north of Charlotte.
The officers, acting on a tip, were looking for the stolen goods but allegedly discovered 1.5 grams of methamphetamine as well.
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}The pilfered items included heavy equipment parts, scrap metal, welders, and truck parts and were reported stolen by two local companies, Lee Family Real Estate, LTD and Larry Grant, Inc., a trucking firm. The stolen items were being kept in a trailer and another building on Mayfield's property, according to the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office.
About 40 guns, including antique weapons and high-powered rifles, were also found at the property, the report stated. Police seized the weapons and planned to check with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to make sure none were stolen.
Mayfield was released after posting a $3,000 bond and was scheduled to appear in court Wednesday. He could face additional charges beyond drug possession.
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}Mayfield has not competed in a NASCAR race since 2009, when he was suspended indefinitely for testing positive for methamphetamine. Mayfield sued NASCAR to have the suspension nullified, claiming the positive test result was caused by other legal drugs he had taken.
A judge dismissed the lawsuit in May 2010.
Mayfield raced 433 times in the Cup series from 1993 to 2009, winning five times with 96 top 10 finishes.
