The Philadelphia Eagles signed tackle Demetrius Bell to a five-year contract on Wednesday.

"Demetress was one of the top free agent offensive linemen available this year and we are happy to be able to add him to our squad," said Birds head coach Andy Reid. "We had a chance to meet him over the weekend and study him extensively on tape and we came away quite impressed with what we saw and heard. He's a great athlete."

Bell spent the previous four seasons with the Buffalo Bills, who selected him in the seventh round of the 2008 draft out of Northwestern State.

The 27-year-old Louisiana native and son of former NBA star Karl Malone has played in 31 games -- all but one of them starts -- over four NFL seasons.

The Eagles lost starting left tackle Jason Peters to a ruptured Achilles tendon last week. He had surgery on Tuesday.
