DCU edges Chicago to clinch top spot

Washington, D.C. (SportsNetwork.com) - D.C. United locked up the top spot in the Eastern Conference on Saturday by picking up a 2-1 win over the Chicago Fire at RFK Stadium.

Chris Pontius and Eddie Johnson provided the goals as United (17-9-7) climbs to 58 points on the season, a remarkable turnaround after claiming just three league wins in 2013.

D.C. went in front after 31 minutes in Saturday's affair as Johnson delivered a sublime cross to the back post where Pontius was waiting to nod home his first goal of the season.

The hosts held the narrow lead until the second half when Johnson doubled United's lead by pouncing on a Fire turnover in the 53rd minute and smashing a right-footed shot into the roof of the net.

Harrison Shipp managed to pull one back for Chicago in the 67th minute, but United held off the visitors the rest of the way to seal all three points and secure first place.
