Cuevas tops Sousa in Swedish Open final

Bastad, Sweden (SportsNetwork.com) - Pablo Cuevas overpowered fifth-seeded Joao Sousa of Portugal 6-2, 6-1 to win the Swedish Open title Sunday in his first ATP singles final.

The start of the match was suspended nearly five hours because of rain, but once play got underway, Cuevas made quick work of Sousa.

Cuevas, 28, fired four aces and broke Sousa's serve five times in the 58- minute match. He is the first Uruguayan to win a Tour-level title since Marcelo Filippini's triumph in St. Polten, Austria in May 1997.

Ranked 111th in the world, Cuevas joined Martin Klizan as the only two tournament champs from outside the top 100 this season. Klizan, then-No. 111, won the BMW Open in May.

"This is an amazing week. Today I played unbelievable. I'm so happy to win my first title," said Cuevas. "This city is beautiful and for sure I'll be back next year."

Sousa was victorious in his only other final appearance, capturing the title in Kuala Lumpur last year.
