SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) - The Phoenix Coyotes fought through another season of ownership uncertainty, earning a playoff spot while wondering if this would be their last year in the desert.

And, just like last season, the Coyotes will face the formidable Detroit Red Wings in the first round.

They hope this season will end a little better.

The higher seed in last year's playoff series, Phoenix won an impressive Game 6 in Detroit, only to lose Game 7 by five goals at home with captain Shane Doan out because of a shoulder injury.

The Coyotes are hoping the experience will help them this time around as the lower seed against the Central Division champion Red Wings.

Game 1 is Wednesday in Detroit.
