GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - The Phoenix Coyotes have signed former Calgary Flames head coach Jim Playfair to a multiyear contract as associate coach.
Playfair has been with the Flames organization for the past 11 seasons, the last two as head coach of the team's American Hockey League franchise in Abbotsford, British Columbia. He was Calgary head coach in 2006-07, leading the Flames to a 43-29-10 record and the eighth playoff spot in the West.
Playfair played nine seasons of professional hockey, including 21 games with Edmonton and Chicago after being selected by the Edmonton Oilers in the first round of the 1982 NHL entry draft.
He joins coach Dave Tippett's staff as a replacement for Ulf Samuelsson, who resigned to become a head coach of the MODO team in the Swedish Elite League.
