Cornet, Giorgi sneak into Katowice quarters

Katowice, Poland (SportsNetwork.com) - Reigning champion Alize Cornet and 2014 runner-up Camila Giorgi were a pair of hard-fought second-round winners Wednesday at the Katowice Open.
The second-seeded Cornet overcame Slovenian Polona Hercog 4-6, 6-1, 6-3, while the No. 3 seed Giorgi came from behind to beat Polish qualifier Magda Linette 6-7 (3-7), 6-2, 6-3 at this indoor hardcourt event.
France's Cornet got the best of the Italian Giorgi in last year's finale at Spodek.

Also in the second round, Czech Klara Koukalova handled two-time Grand Slam runner-up Vera Zvonareva of Russia 6-1, 6-4 and Belgian Alison Van Uytvanck drubbed German Carina Witthoeft 6-3, 6-3.
The first round concluded when Romanian Monica Niculescu topped Frenchwoman Kristina Mladenovic 6-4, 6-4.
On Thursday, top-seeded Polish favorite Agnieszka Radwanska will face Belgian An-Sophie Mestach in a second-round affair.
