Colombian World Cup Hero James Rodriguez Keeps Scoring - Awards And A Fat Contract

Everything is coming up roses for Colombia’s World Cup soccer hero, James Rodríguez. Millions upon millions of roses, in fact.

For one thing, on Monday he is expected to be officially announced as Real Madrid’s newest galáctico, with the team paying AS Monaco around $100 million, as reported by the Spanish paper Marca, and Goal.com.

This just one year removed from Rodríguez having transferred to Monaco from the Portuguese club Porto for a reported $60 million.

Also on Monday, FIFA announced that its Goal of the Tournament for the 2014 World Cup had been awarded to Rodríguez’s strike against Uruguay in the Round of 16.

In the 28th minute of that match, Rodríguez had his back to the goal when he controlled a high pass from Juan Cuadrado with his chest. He spun and struck the ball on the volley with his left foot, just over the outstretched hand of Uruguayan keeper Fernando Muslera. The ball grazed the underside of the crossbar and bounced into the goal for a 1-0 lead Colombia never relinquished.

The FIFA website logged more than 4 million votes, according to the Daily Mail online, with Rodríguez’s goal receiving more than half. The flying header by the Netherlands’ Robin van Persie against Spain was second in the voting.

Rodríguez is the third consecutive South American to win World Cup Goal of the Tournament after Uruguay’s Diego Forlán in 2010 and Argentina’s Maxi Rodríguez in 2006.

The Colombian also won the tournament's Golden Boot award for scoring the most goals. Rodríguez had six, with Germany's Thomas Müller finishing second with five.

At Real Madrid, he joins a star-studded attack that features Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema.
