Claxton tops crowded leaderboard in Mexico

Will Claxton posted a bogey-free, under 66 Thursday to grab a one-stroke lead after the opening round of the Mayakoba Golf Classic at Riviera.
Claxton, who is winless on the PGA Tour, has seven players one stroke back and eight more two shots behind at El Camaleon Golf Course.
Charles Howell III posted a four-under 67 and was joined in second place by Greg Owen, Alejandro Canizares, Marc Turnesa, Mark D. Anderson, Matt Every and John Huh.

Kevin Stadler headlines the group tied for ninth at three-under 68.
Course designer Greg Norman struggled to an eight-over 79. European Ryder Cup captain Jose Maria Olazabal managed a one-over 72, while Nick Price shot two- under 69, Tom Lehman carded a one-under 70 and Fred Funk stumbled to a two- over 73.
