ChiSox down Tigers in 2012 home opener

Jake Peavy tossed 6 2/3 strong innings and the Chicago White Sox opened the home portion of their schedule with a 5-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers.

Peavy (1-0) gave up just two hits and two runs to go with eight strikeouts and one walk for the White Sox, who have won five straight home openers.

Dayan Viciedo hit a solo homer for Chicago, which improved to 4-2 on the young season. Brent Morel, A.J. Pierzynski and Paul Konerko each knocked in a run.

Detroit starter Max Scherzer (0-1) allowed three runs on five hits in six full frames to take the loss in the opener of this three-game set. He struck out 11 and walked one.

Delmon Young hit a two-run homer for the Tigers, who were trying for their first 6-1 start since 1985.

Peavy retired the first 10 batters he faced in order. Brennan Boesch put a stop to the streak with a one-out single in the fourth. However, Miguel Cabrera fouled out and Prince Fielder grounded out to keep it a scoreless game.

Viciedo's solo shot to left-center field in the fifth gave Chicago a 1-0 edge.

The White Sox added two more runs during their next at-bat. Alejandro De Aza walked, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on Konerko's two-out single. Pierzynski followed with an RBI triple into the right-field corner, making it 3-0.

Peavy had given up just one hit through six innings, but gave up a homer to Young in the seventh. Cabrera walked with one out and scored two batters later when Young cleared the wall in left. The Tigers would put men on second and third with two outs later in the frame. Andy Dirks then lined a ball into left, but Viciedo made a nice catch to keep it 3-2.

Detroit put men on the corners with one out in the eighth. This time around, it was shortstop Alexei Ramirez who made a nice play to keep Chicago in front. Ramirez made a nice stop on Cabrera's grounder and tossed the ball to second with his glove to start a double play.

The White Sox added two insurance runs in the bottom half of the inning. De Aza led off with a triple and scored on Morel's single. Brayan Villarreal's wild pitch later in the inning allowed Morel to score.

Hector Santiago stranded a runner on third in the ninth to record his third save of the season.
