SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Will Cherry sank a free throw with 2 seconds left in the game, enabling Montana to escape with a 61-60 road victory over Sacramento State on Friday night.
Montana (6-4, 2-0 Big Sky) was able to overcome a rally by Sacramento State (6-4, 1-1) in the final 19 seconds.
Sacramento State's Cody Demps hit a 3-pointer with 19 seconds left to cut Montana's lead to 60-57, and another 3-pointer, this one by Dylan Garrity, tied it at 60 with 7 seconds remaining.
Cherry then stepped to the line, making 1 of 2 foul shots, and time ran out on Sacramento State.
Mathias Ward scored 16 points to lead Montana. Kareem Jamar scored 11 and Cherry 10.
John Dickson scored 15 for Sacramento State, Mikh McKinney 14, Garrity 12 and Konner Veleto 10. Veleto also had 10 rebounds.
